Our tips on castors, brakes and handles in hospital trolleys for better mobility

Every hospital cart moves, stops, and gets pushed. And this happens dozens of times a day, in areas where every gesture must be fluid, safe, immediate. Wheels, brakes, handles and bumpers are anything but details: they are fundamental elements that guarantee practical, silent and stress-proof mobility. In this article, you will find a guide to the most important components according to our experience.

Castors and brakes: each context has its own needs

Wheels are a key element in the design of a hospital trolley. Depending on the function of the trolley and the ward in which it will be used, CFS Italia offers different solutions.

  • Antistatic wheels : easily recognizable by the yellow border/dot, they have a very specific function: to discharge any electrostatic charges to the ground, preventing them from being transmitted to doctors, operators or equipment. They are essential in emergency trolleys equipped with electrical devices such as defibrillators, for example, and in environments with high electrical sensitivity such as operating rooms. In these cases, it is enough to install two antistatic castors to guarantee the safety of the entire trolley.
  • Wheels with centralized brake and directional lock : for larger and more maneuverable trolleys, such as medication or procedure trolleys, CFS Italia offers a centralized braking system that allows you to act on the wheels with a single bidirectional pedal. By pressing the red pedal, all four wheels are blocked simultaneously; by pressing the green pedal, one of the four wheels is directionally blocked to facilitate the straight movement of the trolley in narrow corridors or areas.

All the castors of our trolleys are made of plastic material with anti-thread rubber, and available in different diameters (125 mm and 150 mm are the most common) to adapt to the weight and intended use of the cart.

Ergonomic handles: comfort you can feel

Every trolley must be easy to maneuver, even in the most critical moments. For this reason, CFS Italia chooses push handles with particular attention to ergonomics. They are always rounded and anti-trauma, designed to avoid painful impacts in the event of a collision and to ensure a comfortable grip from any angle. The chosen material is aluminium: light, resistant and with pleasant hand feel.

For large trolleys, such as Alfa 23, a double handle is installed, one on each side. In other more compact models, such as Tornado with extractable shelf , the handle is positioned on one side only, with the possibility of choosing between right or left during configuration.

The drawer handles are also designed for simple and safe use: they are made of aluminum for steel drawers, integrated into the front for technopolymer drawers, without protruding parts and with a design that guarantees an excellent grip.

Bumpers: protection for trolleys, walls and healthcare staff

Every trolley, sooner or later, encounters an obstacle. To protect both the structures and the trolley itself, CFS Italia offers technopolymer bumpers, divided into two types: anti-tipping and corner

  • Anti-tip bumpers : these are used in trolleys with deeper and heavier metal drawers (such as Alfa01 or Genius) and have a stabilizing function: they prevent the trolley from turning over even when all the drawers are open. They have a more pronounced shape, designed to increase the support surface and keep the trolley stable.
  • Corner bumpers : ideal for lighter carts with plastic drawers, such as Tornado Small, corner bumpers are more discreet but still effective. Their function is primarily aesthetic and protective, and they have evolved over time into more rounded versions for smooth interaction with the castors.
